Why is it necessary to get regular screenings in order to maintain a healthy heart and a healthy lifestyle?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cardiovascular diseases are one of the leading causes of death. Around 25% of deaths in India are due to cardiovascular diseases, according to Hiranandani Hospital Powai News. Experts believe that a healthy lifestyle and regular screening are important to identify high-risk factors at an early age only. 

On world heart day, 2021, hospitals across Mumbai witnessed a 50% rise in emergency footfalls of patients with heart attacks. This occurred due to the solitary lifestyle of people during pandemics and also disruption of treatment of heart patients due to lockdown.

On average, around 90 people die due to heart attacks every day in Mumbai. At the initial stage of the pandemic, our hospital witnessed a drastic drop in cases of a heart attack. But in the past two-three months there has been a sudden surge in the cases of heart attack with the dip of daily Covid-19 cases, said Dr. Sujit Chatterjee Hiranandani Hospital

Following are some tips that will keep your heart healthy and prevent you from getting any heart-related problems.

  1. Regular cardiac check-ups should be done by those with higher risk factors such as obesity, smoking, high-stress jobs, lack of exercise, family history with heart attacks. 
  2. The key to keeping your heart healthy is regulating your calories. 
  3. Avoid junk food, sugary food, and beverages and exercise every day. 
  4. Tackle obesity from early childhood by promoting sports and exercises in schools. 
  5. Distressing activities indulge in adults due to their long working hours at the job. So don’t take much stress.

Following are some warning symptoms that you should know before you get any serious heart condition.

  1. Shortness of breath, fatigue, or chest tightness that feels abnormal. 
  2. Worsening of the other symptoms after physical activity. 
  3. Pain and discomfort at the centre of the chest. 
  4. Numbness on the face, arms, elbows, especially one side of the body. 
  5. Difficulty in walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination, severe headache with no known cause. 
  6. Fainting or unconsciousness without any particular reason.

Above mentioned symptoms could lead to heart disease. Apart from this, there are some disorders that cause heart disease that is defined by the World Health Organisation.

  1. Coronary heart disease: It is caused by the plaque developed in the wall of the arteries that take blood to the heart from all parts of the body. This leads to the narrowing of the arteries.
  2. Cerebrovascular disease: IT IS THE DISEASE to the vessels that supply blood to the brain. 
  3. Peripheral arterial disease: it is the disease of vessels that supply blood to arms and legs from the heart. 
  4. Congenital heart disease: It is a birth defect that affects the normal development and functioning of the heart caused by malformations of the heart structure.
